Esdras Nogueira is a saxophonist and cultural producer from Brasília, Brazil, with five solo albums to his name, and a sixth set for release in early 2026.
Drawing inspiration from the sounds and flavors of the Cerrado, the savanna-like bioma in which the Brazilian capital is located, Esdras blends Brazilian rhythms, Afrobeat, and the improvisational language of jazz in a joyful, danceable sound, with mellow, baritone-led melodies that have become his signature.
Esdras is a member of Móveis Coloniais de Acaju, a band that helped shape Brazil’s independent music scene in the early 2000s and that has recently returned to the stages. Since his first solo album in 2014, Esdras has become a leading figure in Brazil’s indie instrumental scene and was one of five artists from the country’s Midwest region selected for Funarte’s Pixinguinha Prize. He is currently touring his fifth release, Lá em Casa Sessions.
Music and gastronomy are the roots of this project, where each track was created and recorded alongside a recipe, with every piece paired with a dish. Everything was performed and filmed live in the living room-kitchen of his home in Brasília, in the heart of the Brazilian Cerrado.
His solo career began with the release of Capivara in 2014, an album that paid tribute to maestro Hermeto Pascoal, featuring fresh interpretations of his compositions. The work was praised by Hermeto himself: “I listened to it, it’s very good. I was pleased with the interpretation of the songs. They sound different without losing their essence. Esdras started well, he will go far.” — Hermeto Pascoal.
Subsequent albums, NaBarriguda (2016) and Esdras Nogueira Quinteto Ao Vivo (2017), feature the saxophonist’s original compositions. The acclaimed Transe (2019) is an instrumental reinterpretation of Caetano Veloso’s Transa, originally recorded in London in 1971 and released during Brazil’s military dictatorship. In this album, the songs are reborn with arrangements infused with dub, reggae, and Afrobeat, all filtered through the distinctly Brazilian voice of Esdras’ saxophone.
In addition to being a musician, Esdras has an instrumental music festival, Festival Música Transforma, since 2018 and in 2025 held the first Brazilian music conference dedicated to the instrumental music scene.
Esdras is also a cook and has a gastronomic project called Coma Lá em Casa with his wife and manager, Mariana Cardoso.

Também de destaque está o Transe – Esdras Nogueira e Grupo tocam o Transa. O disco lançado em 2019 é uma reinterpretação instrumental do álbum transa de Caetano Veloso, gravado em Londres em 1971 e lançado no ano seguinte durante o obscuro período da ditadura militar no brasil, quando o cantor retornou de seu exílio na Inglaterra.
Seu primeiro trabalho solo foi o Capivara em 2014, um tributo ao mestre hermeto pascoal, só com músicas do mestre e recebeu elogios do próprio Hermeto pascoal – ” Ouvi, está muito bom. Fiquei contente com a interpretação das músicas. Elas ficaram diferentes sem perder a essência. O Esdras começou bem, ele vai longe”. Além do trabalho solo Esdras também toca na Sr.Gonzales Serenata Orquestra, Remobília e banda Consuelo, além de ser o idealizador do Coma Lá em Casa e do Festival Música Transforma.
